Taryn Loutit is a graduate student in mechanical engineering whose research harnesses advanced electromagnetic modeling to design miniature-scale actuators for precision control. Scaling conventional motors to small dimensions introduces fundamental challenges in achieving low power dissipation while maintaining performance. Taryn develops analytical electromagnetic models in MATLAB and performs large-scale parametric sweeps across aspect ratio variations to explore novel magnetic topologies. For complex systems, she uses Simulink to solve coupled differential equations representing magnetic circuits with hundreds of branches. Taryn has created custom visualization tools to compare simulated predictions against experimental frequency response data, enhancing her ability to validate designs before fabrication. As a MathWorks Fellow, she will automate geometry generation and finite element preprocessing workflows to accelerate design iteration cycles. By combining analytical modeling with systematic optimization, Taryn’s approach could reshape miniature actuator design for precision applications beyond current motor capabilities.
