Mens et Manus (Mind and Hand)

Across more than 40 makerspaces, MIT provides the tools, technologies, and training to turn imagination into invention. From rapid prototyping to advanced fabrication, these spaces fuel discovery, making, and hands-on learning. Spanning more than 130,000 square feet, they support projects that bridge disciplines—from robotics and materials science to biomaking and design.

Many departments, labs, and centers within the School of Engineering operate their own makerspaces: some open to the MIT community, and some only open to members of SoE departments and specific areas of study.

The MIT community can find maker resources at make.mit.edu, including M1T, a first-year maker training program, and The Deep and Metropolis, open-access makerspaces optimizing peer-to-peer hands-on trainings.

Huang-Hobbs BioMaker Space

The Huang-Hobbs BioMaker Space in the Department of Biological Engineering supports experimentation at the intersection of biology and engineering, enabling students to prototype biological systems and devices safely and creatively.
