Seou Choi is a graduate student in electrical engineering and computer science whose work explores optical computing platforms that leverage quantum noise for machine learning. His photonic system uses optical parametric oscillators as probabilistic neurons to perform inference and image generation tasks. Leveraging MATLAB’s Parallel Computing Toolbox, Seou designs custom neural network architectures optimized for optical hardware and validates performance through digital twin simulations before experimental deployment. He investigates nanophotonic scintillators for advanced X-ray imaging by simulating light propagation through engineered nanostructures with MATLAB, potentially enabling sharper medical images at lower radiation doses. A parallel effort pioneers robotic systems for autonomous assembly and alignment of precision optical equipment, planning to integrate MATLAB’s Robotics System Toolbox with physics-based simulations for fully automated optical laboratory systems. As a MathWorks Fellow, Seou will strengthen these computational frameworks at the intersection of photonics and AI. His work could reshape practical optical computing and enable entirely new approaches to machine learning hardware.
