Certificate Programs
Engineering certificate programs let undergraduate students customize their education and dive deeper into what excites them most—whether that’s sustainability, entrepreneurship, computing, or beyond. These programs complement core studies with hands-on, cross-cutting experiences—preparing students to think broadly, collaborate across fields, and step confidently into their careers.
Certificate Programs
New Engineering Education Transformation (NEET)
NEET is a three-year, hands-on program that lets MIT undergraduates learn by building across disciplines. Working in cross-departmental teams, NEET scholars tackle real-world projects that develop the creativity, technical skill, and confidence to lead innovation in any field. Students earn a degree in their chosen major plus a NEET Certificate in one of four interdisciplinary “threads.”
NEET Threads
Autonomous Machines (AM)
Learn by building and immersing in robotics in the NEET AM thread! Design, build, and deploy robots and autonomous machines that sense, interact with, and impact the real world through a series of individual and interdisciplinary team projects.
Climate + Sustainability Systems (CSS)
Combat the urgent climate crisis by creating innovative solutions in the NEET CSS thread! Work on groundbreaking and impactful research projects in diverse and climate-conscious teams.
Digital Cities (DC)
Build the cities of the future by applying your computer science skills to real-world projects in the NEET DC thread! Start shaping and improving city landscapes for a sustainable, livable future at the intersection of computer science and urban planning.
Living Machines (LM)
Apply engineering principles and concepts to problems in the life and medical sciences in the NEET LM thread! Discover, design, and create innovative living systems for various biotechnological and medical device applications with interdisciplinary teams.
Nikita, a Course 6 undergraduate, speaks about her time with NEET and the Autonomous Machines (AM) thread.
When MIT’s interdisciplinary NEET program is a perfect fit
Junior Katie Spivakovsky describes her path through New Engineering Education Transformation to biomedical research and beyond.
Gordon-MIT Engineering Leadership Program (GEL)
The Gordon-MIT Engineering Leadership Program (GEL) bridges the gap between technical expertise and real-world impact, preparing students to lead with purpose and precision. Open to juniors and seniors, GEL is a two-year sequence combining weekly Engineering Leadership Labs, team-based challenges, reflection, and mentorship from industry professionals. Through this hands-on experience, students learn to guide projects, motivate teams, and translate great ideas into meaningful results — skills they carry into every stage of their careers.
Undergraduate Engineering Entrepreneurship Certificate
The Engineering Entrepreneurship Certificate—offered by the School of Engineering, MIT Sloan, and the Martin Trust Center—gives undergraduates a practical way to explore entrepreneurship and leadership alongside their chosen major. Through focused coursework, co-curricular activities over IAP and the summer, and immersion in MIT’s vibrant innovation ecosystem, students gain the skills, perspective, and confidence to become entrepreneurial leaders in any field.
