Xiao Wan is a postdoctoral fellow in the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering whose research focuses on developing ultrasound-enabled bioelectronic systems for wireless, adaptive, and precise modulation of deep biological tissues. Xiao investigates how advances in ultrasound physics, soft materials, and intelligent system design can overcome longstanding barriers to bioelectronic medicine. During his doctoral studies, Xiao pioneered a liquid-state ultrasound transduction platform that addressed fundamental challenges associated with acoustic impedance mismatch and mechanical incompatibility between conventional electronic devices and biological tissues. This breakthrough established a new mechanism for ultrasound energy transfer and enabled highly efficient, programmable bioelectronic interfaces. As an MIT-Novo Nordisk Artificial Intelligence Postdoctoral Fellow, Xiao will develop AI-enabled, image-guided bioelectronic platforms that integrate functional ultrasound imaging with machine learning for real-time monitoring and adaptive therapeutic control. This work could enable autonomous, personalized interventions and advance noninvasive therapies that respond dynamically to changing physiological conditions.
