Shreya Sharma is a graduate student in aeronautics and astronautics whose research evaluates the integrated social cost of aviation arising from both climate and air-quality impacts. Aviation emissions produce not only CO₂ but also nitrogen oxides and particulate matter at cruise altitudes, affecting global temperature and regional human health through altitude- and region-dependent atmospheric processes. She generates aircraft- and altitude-specific emissions inventories using the MATLAB-based Aviation Emissions Inventory Code, incorporating satellite-derived ADS-B observations to capture real-world operating patterns. These emissions are then propagated through climate models and chemical transport simulations to quantify surface ozone and PM₂.₅ impacts, monetizing damages through epidemiological and economic frameworks. As a MathWorks Fellow, Shreya will integrate these components into an extensible policy analysis framework built on the Aviation Portfolio Management Tool–Impacts Climate, a MATLAB-based tool used in aviation climate policy analysis. Her work could transform aviation policy by enabling rapid, integrated assessment of how technological and operational interventions minimize societal costs while clarifying regional equity considerations.
