New faculty member Yunha Hwang once wanted to be an astronaut and instead found a close equivalent to studying life in space: the novel biology of organisms that survive and thrive in extreme environments, many of which cannot be cultivated in the lab. Hwang is using the power of computation to explore microbial diversity and map the evolutionary relationships between each instance of life.
