Keyu Chen is a graduate student in chemical engineering whose research develops scalable delivery platforms for organ-scale cellular therapeutics to treat chronic diseases. While encapsulating therapeutic cells in protective devices enables long-term treatment without immunosuppression, a major bottleneck remains where there is insufficient oxygen and nutrient transport within implanted devices. He develops a MATLAB-driven closed-loop digital manufacturing platform integrating computational design, multi-material printing control, real-time feedback, and predictive modeling. MATLAB’s Image Processing and Computer Vision Toolboxes enable Keyu to implement algorithms detecting polymerization regions and dynamically adjusting printing parameters. He develops digital twins using MATLAB and Simulink to integrate transport models, mechanical behavior, and experimental feedback, enabling rapid convergence toward optimal device designs. As a MathWorks Fellow, Keyu will advance closed-loop fabrication workflows in MATLAB for enhanced biomedical device design. By establishing an integrated MATLAB-driven framework, his work could enable translation of customizable cell delivery devices for diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune disorders.
