John Huang is a graduate student in electrical engineering and computer science taking on the challenge of understanding the device physics of ferroelectric hafnium zirconium oxide (HZO) at high frequencies. He studies ferroelectric polarization dynamics under realistic gigahertz operating conditions. To characterize this behavior, he designed coplanar waveguide structures using MATLAB’s RF Toolbox and performs broadband impedance characterization from 1 kHz to 65 GHz, using de-embedding techniques to isolate intrinsic ferroelectric response from parasitic contributions. Through MATLAB-based circuit modeling and parameter fitting, he developed an electrical methodology for the investigation of metal-oxide interfacial properties and trap dynamics in ferroelectric capacitors. As a MathWorks Fellow, John will extend these characterization frameworks to ferroelectric-oxide transistor integration and RF applications. His discoveries could help establish ferroelectric HZO as a practical platform for next-generation 6G and neuromorphic computing systems.
