Alex Tung is a graduate student in electrical engineering and computer science whose research is in navigable soundfield reproduction. Current immersive audio renderers utilize stationary or virtually derived acoustic sources, while capturing and rendering sound fields using freely moving devices remains an open challenge. He is developing a 6DOF framework integrating audio processing with computer vision and sensor fusion, leveraging multi-perspective scene understanding and localization methods to resolve audio streams to device position. As a MathWorks Fellow, Alex will optimize this integrated computational framework, using MATLAB’s Deep Learning Toolbox and Coder to prototype methods and deploy performant processing pipelines. His work could open possibilities for next-generation communication, enabling immersive audio experiences that are natural and plausible to listeners.
