We believe in shining a spotlight on hard work and exceptional achievement.
Each year the MIT School of Engineering honors exceptional graduate and undergraduate students for their academic, teaching, and mentoring achievements.
Barry Goldwater Scholarship
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 as a living memorial to honor Senator Barry Goldwater’s lifetime of service. Each year the foundation bestows scholarships to eligible U.S. college sophomores and juniors with excellent academic records who intend to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering.
The annual nomination process begins in late September. Each department is able to nominate one student for this scholarship. Students should contact their academic administrator for more information about the department deadline and nominations process. The School of Engineering is able to submit up to two school-wide nominations.
Henry Ford II Scholar
Established by a grant from the Ford Motor Company in 1977, the Henry Ford II Scholarship is awarded annually. It honors an undergraduate who, at the end of his or her third year of study at MIT, has achieved the highest academic standing in the School.
The annual nomination process begins in January. The school receives a list of eligible students from the Registrar’s office and distributes to the departments with a request for nominations. The award is presented to the student during the spring term.
Graduate Student Extraordinary Teaching and Mentoring Award
Established in 2006, the Graduate Student Extraordinary Teaching and Mentoring Award recognizes a graduate student who has demonstrated extraordinary mentoring as a teaching or research assistant.
Nominees should be among those who have already received a departmental award but have not yet received the Goodwin Medal. The annual nomination process begins in October.
