The Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching was established in 1989 by the School of Engineering to recognize outstanding contributions to undergraduate education by members of its faculty. The award stands as a tribute to one of the School’s finest teachers, Dr. Amar Bose, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and founder of the Bose Corporation. This award may be given annually to a faculty member whose teaching contributions over an extended period of time are characterized by dedication, care, creativity, and inspiration to students and colleagues. The Bose Award carries a cash prize of $8,000 made possible by a gift to MIT from the Bose Corporation and the Bose Foundation.
Nominees for this award should be faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in renewing the content of a subject, developing a new subject, or authoring a text. Excellence in classroom or laboratory teaching as well as other contributions to undergraduate education, such as UROP or special projects, may also form the basis of a nomination for this award.
Nominations should be sent to the Office of the Dean of Engineering. The award will be made by the Dean upon the recommendation of a committee appointed by the Dean and made up of three former Bose award recipients. This award is presented each year at the Institute’s Awards convocation.
