Dedric Carter

Dedric A. Carter, PhD, is the Assistant Dean of Development and Strategic Initiatives in the MIT School of Engineering. He also oversees MIT’s Office of Engineering Outreach Programs, and is a lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT’s School of Engineering.

Carter is an experienced practitioner in the application of emerging technologies on business strategy and innovation, and an advocate for K-12 education in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Carter's career in industry spans nearly a decade in leadership capacities for consulting and products organizations. He has served as a Director of Technology Strategy and Director for Business Process Automation for CGI-AMS, and as Director of Consulting for a firm in the UK. His most recent industry role was as a Senior Manager in IT Strategy at Deloitte Consulting, LLP. On multiple occasions, he has appeared on the NBC Digital Edge technology showcase during his tenure as the Director of the CGI-AMS Center for Advanced Technologies. Carter has performed research at MIT Lincoln Labs and AT&T Bell Laboratories. He is a past member of the MIT Corporation (board of trustees) where he sat on the first Engineering Systems Division Visiting Committee. As a student, he was the David M. Adler Thesis Award winner from the MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in addition to receiving nomination to the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society where he is an Associate Member. Carter is a member of IEEE, ACM, AAAS, and UPE. He has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT and a Ph.D. in Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University (NSU).

Carter has been an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Information Resources Management and he has been a member of the International Conference Program Committee for the International Resources Management Association. He is currently a trustee and vice-chair of the academic board for the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Virginia. Additionally, he is a member of the Board of Governors for the Academy of Applied Science. Prior to assuming the role of assistant dean, Carter lead engineering outreach programs to further participation in the STEM disciplines. He is a tireless advocate of opportunity creation for young minds.
